At Avery Labradors, health, temperament, proper conformation, and trainability are the factors which influence our breeding program.
Each litter we produce is carefully planned with the highest hopes for the future. No litter is ever planned without the intention of keeping at least one puppy to raise, train, and compete with. You can rest assured in the knowledge that your puppy's parentage was planned with the goals of health, soundness, temperament, and trainability in mind.
HEALTH:
Labradors are prone to several genetic diseases and conditions. Poor breeding decisions by irresponsible breeders and puppy mills contribute greatly to the number of puppies produced every year with crippling diseases and long term health issues.
At Avery Labradors, health is first and foremost. Our breeding individuals are free from allergies, have orthopedic clearances through the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals), are tested for multiple genetic conditions, and receive ACVO exams regularly to rule out other eye disorders. No living creature can ever be guaranteed to be 100% healthy over the course of their lives, but you can be confident that these puppies are off to a good start based on the health clearances of their parents and previous generations before them.
TEMPERAMENT:
Proper Temperament is essential for a Labrador. Several of our Labradors have rally/obedience titles and are certified AKC Canine Good Citizens. We also have several dogs who have been certified by TDI as passing the qualifications to become therapy dogs. Our puppies are exposed to other dogs, cats, and children before coming home.
CONFORMATION:
A dog’s conformation is more important than just making them pretty enough to win ribbons and obtain titles. Every part of their physiology affects balance, movement, and function. Conformation faults can not only impair gaits, but can lead to soundness problems later in life.
TRAINABILITY:
Trainability is highly important to me because I live closely with my Labradors and expect them to be easy to live within the house while still maintaining the desire and ability to retrieve in the field, as well as respond appropriately in all other situations. Whether meeting new friends on a walk in the neighborhood, attending a family event, or competing in structured events, it is important to expect a level of consistency of behavior. Part of this can be attributed to the good temperament they are born with, but one cannot overlook training. Each puppy must be taught right behavior from wrong to be a blessing to live with rather than a curse.
